Varus/Valgus Wedges 6° & 9° Used for pronation or suppination problems of the foot and ankle. Wedges are designed to help align the calcaneus (heel) during ambulation to limit excessive pronation or suppination. Varus / valgus heel wedges can be used to reduce pronation and supination by angling the calcaneus (heel bone) either medially or laterally and when standing, walking or running. These heel wedges are very durable and provide either 6 or 9 degrees of correction Heel Varus Below is an illustration of the varying degrees of heel position when view from behind relative to the ground. Inverted or varus heel is pictured to the left (A), neutral or perpindicular position is center (B), and everted or valgus heel to the right (C). Valgus alignment was seen in 24% and varus in 76%. In addition, valgus deformity has been noted to be more common in females, patients with inflammatory arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, and those with metabolic abnormalities such as rickets or renal osteodystrophy. In uncompensated rearfoot varus (A), the calcaneus (and forefoot) are inverted when the subtalar joint is neutral. The person compensates (B) by pronating STJ to allow medial heel to touch the ground. Compensation retards supination during midstance/terminal stance. Our heel wedges are available in 3 degree,6 degree, and 9 degree variations. Lateral / Medial (Varus/valgus) heel wedges are intended to reduce pronation and supination. This can be related to lower-extremity misalignment which can result in painful knees as well as ankles and feet. There has been emphasised the varus forefoot is commoner than generally supposed, but the deformity may not be recognised unless the foot is correctly examined with the heel held square. Once weight is on the foot the obvious deformity is the valgus heel. Physiological causes. The bony arch of the foot is potentially unstable. A varus or valgus heel wedges that can be easily fabricated from our adjustable heel lift, the Triple V Heel Lift are meant to decrease either supination or pronation of the subtalar joint.Improving the stabilization of the subtalar joint with a varus or valgus heel wedge can improve foot, ankle, knee, hip and lower back function. This is known as valgus heel. It may not cause any problems if it doesn't drift too far, but it can be troublesome if your arch flattens as a result. Early treatment of rheumatoid arthritis may slow the development of valgus heel. Related information. Rheumatoid arthritis. In a cubitus varus involving the elbow, for example, the elbow would be turned towards the body. The genu valgum, involving the knee, creates a bowlegged appearance over time. Another common form of varus deformity is the talipes varus, which occurs in the ankle. A varus deformity will likely require surgery.
